Firefly Nouveau

I want these. They are very reasonably priced!  But I am running out of free wall space in my house.  Seriously, it's kind of ridiculous in here.  But SO SHINY!

I hope you guys know how to knit...

...because you are going to want to knit this. This was created by a wonderful knitter I found over on Ravelry named Kelly. Check out this adorable little Serenity she made!



It's so cute! It could use some glow in the dark yarn on the little engine parts, but whatever. Oh yeah, did I mention that this pattern is TOTALLY FREE? It is so awesome that she would not only take the time to write up a pattern like this (because writing patterns are a total pain in the butt) but that she would put it up for the whole world to use. So go forth and knit! Stay tuned!

No fair! I had that same basic idea...

I was so totally going to make this! No fair! Someone must have been reading my mind or something.

But mine was going to say "a second location" not "the second location", so it's totally different. And if you don't recognize the quote, it's from 30 Rock. And if you haven't seen it you should probably go watch it right now, it's awesome. This quote was from an episode with Carrie Fisher. And they totally made a Star Wars reference--and what's more, Carrie Fisher helped. And not just in that episode! In almost every episode. Also, I was reading a book the other day (maybe it was House of Mirth? I don't remember) and this one character's name was Carrie Fisher and they always referred to her by her first and last name, every single time. It was really creepy. Anyway, here's another person who stole another one of my awesome ideas:

One of Tracy Jordan's pearls of wisdom. Being shark week, I thought it was appropriate. At least no one took my last idea from 30 Rock...no way I'm going to tell you guys what it is though. It's going to be awesome though. You guys just wait.

Obligatory Firefly craft.

I just loved this little project! It's so cool, because you can change the picture of the bear every week! Or maybe, if your cats keep throwing up on your carpet, you can even put a picture of your cat in there. STUPID CATS.

What was I talking about? Oh yeah! We should have some new dudes coming up for you guys soon--and also some reworked old characters who needed a facelift. Hopefully they will be done soon! Stay tuned!

Grr! Argh!

Alright, just a quick note about this adorable little embroidery project I found over on flickr by TiLT creation!

Dinosaurs? Awesome. Firefly? Awesome. I love the colors she used on the dinosaurs, they are adorable. And I love the childish looking scirbbly font, too. It looks like something Wash would totally draw. Anyway, just a quick note! Back to my own embroidery.

You can't take the Firefly crafts from me!

For some reason I've been seeing a lot of (new! well, to me at least) Firefly related crafts out there. I thought I would share!

First off, some awesome crocheted and knitted versions of Serenity. I do like the crochet one better, I think (the first one) because I like the colors on it and some of the pieces are a little more detailed (I want the removable shuttles though!), but the knit one has a light up butt!
I think if I am ever bored (well, if I'm bored and I don't have mountains of work I'm supposed to be doing--okay, probably even if I do) I want to make one of these bad boys (or is that girl? Are spaceships girls too, like boats? Why are there so many parenthesis in this post?) but it does look rather intimidating. I'll keep an eye out to see if the pattern ever pops up.And then a cute cross stitch that was also found on craftster:
I like the ship, it's instantly recognizable. It's kind of weird that the quote is actually a small dialogue, but I think that the two colors of thread help that a little bit.

And now my favorite, even if it is a bit simple, I think the hearts are a great touch:
Ha ha! Jayne is so gross.

I love Joss Whedon

Hey guys, remember when I wrote how Crochet Me was trying to get an interview with Joss Whedon because he mentioned, in passing, "Where's our write-up in Crocheting Monthly?" Well they freaking did it! They got an interview with Joss Whedon! I can't believe it. You can read the whole article here. And here's the woman who made it happen! Look what she's holding!

"You know, anything that inspires people to make their own little version of something be it puppety, be it crafty, be it a high school production of lip syncing, whatever it is, it's the best kind of review you could ever get for any works. It's just cool. I always want things to become plush."

Bah! It's so cute. I can't believe he actually did an interview! That's so cool. He even talks about the Jayne hat and it's significance. It's a really great interview. I know I'm totally gushing and incoherent, but I'm really excited about it.

And for those of you who don't know (like me, 5 minutes ago) Dr. Horrible goes on sale next Friday, December 19. My birthday! Yay! Anyway, it sounds like they are going to include some really great features, so I think it's going to be a definite buy.

So no more news for now! I hope everyone is having a great December, getting ready for Christmas and the like. Stay tuned for more dudes soon!

There are some crazy stitches up in here

Hey everybody! I know everybody is probably wondering when our next new dude will be up, and all I can say is: soon. We've been kind of burned out on them, so it's been hard to get motivated to make any new characters. But there is a new dude coming soon, so please don't give up on us yet!

Anyway, for the time being, I came across these awesome cross stitch samplers from around the net. If I ever had the patience for doing cross stitch (hello, my many half-finished cross stitch projects) I would totally take these on. If you guys are inspired to do your own, there is this really cool site that turns pictures into cross stitch patterns for you! So now there's no excuse for not immortalizing your favorite picture of a cat with a lemon on its head (one of my many half-finished projects) with cross stitch. Enjoy!
Um, how awesome is this? Not only is it Firefly related, it's also Oregon Trail related. Seemingly random, and yet they work out so well together. This was made by craftster user SkyyAngel and she has graciously posted her instructions here, if anyone wants to make their own. And why wouldn't you? It's awesome.
And of course a Star Wars related sampler. Need I explain why I love this one? I think my favorite part is the two blasters at the bottom with the heart in the middle. You can find more details here.
Aww, best friends forever. You know, except for the burning part. You were rather quick to kill the companion cube, as GLaDOS does not hesitate to remind you. I like the little hearts all over. This one also has a pattern and is available at the creator's website here.

Anyway, I just thought these were all so cute and I had to share! Hopefully I'll get out of my slump soon and start working on characters a little more. Stay tuned!

The shirt off my back--redux

Hey guys! Remember this post, where I posted some of my favorite shirts? Well we finally got around to actually making some of them. We used the freezer paper technique (found here, if anyone is interested) and it was super easy and everything actually came together pretty fast.

If you guys are interested in making your own shirts, you can follow the above tutorial and use these stencils, which have all of the bridges and everything already cut out--all you have to do is print and cut out the black parts. And moving right ahead! Here are the finished products:

Alright, first off, here's the Blue Sun shirt. I wanted it to look all splotchy and weathered (although it's not really as noticeable as in this pic, for some reason the light made it look kind of funny here).

And the Planet Express logo! This one was a little more difficult, because of all the letters, but I liked the way it turned out. We were split on whether or not to make the stencil in different colors, but we ended up just doing one (in blue, my favorite color, of course) and I like the way it turned out. The paint also has a little sparkle in it too, which is awesome. We also left the stencil lines in the letters to give it a more hand-printed stencily look. That's right--stencily.

And finally, the Zelda shirt. My boyfriend made this one for himself, and he made it all stony looking and old. Here's a (slightly) better pic:

He used a couple of different colors all mixed together to give it a stony effect, and it turned out looking really neat. This one's a little sparkly too, but not too noticeable.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share with you guys, and encourage everyone else to try it too. They were so easy and fun to make! And you can do almost any picture you want--I'm thinking of a couple more, maybe a Portal shirt (one of these icons probably) or an Arrested Development shirt--either a Family Band Solution shirt, a Gobias Indsutries shirt (as in "go buy us" a cup of coffee) or a Motherboy shirt. I wouldn't use these exact images, but they are all really cute ideas.

Shiny!

Hi everybody, sorry I haven't had any new things to post for a while, we've been kind of busy working on custom orders. Two of those orders are new characters though, so as soon as they're done we'll have some new pictures for you! It's hard work trying to keep our shop full (yeah right, like that's going to happen) and work on our custom orders at the same time and fit time to watch Voyager everyday (just kidding). Anyway, even though they are not exactly new I though I would share more Firefly pics!
Like little Kaylee. We got her the little umbrella at Target; I know, I know, it's not the right color or design, but I think it's the general effect that's more important. I like her little flower on her belt, too. The pink felt underneath is supposed to be her shirt, but I think if I make another Kaylee I will make her whole upper body in the same yarn as her arms, so it's all variegated and colorful.

And here's Simon--I thought he was going to be really boring, but I think he's actually pretty cute. I like his jacket and his little faux-collar underneath his vest. He even has a chain for his pocket watch.
I was going to make him his red doctor's bag, too, and I never got around to it, because I was too excited to have the whole crew done. One day, I promise, I will make it for him, since he doesn't have much in the way of accessories. We were also thinking about making his red glasses from the first episode, but they creep me out for some reason.

Anyway, we should have a new character to show you by the weekend, if everything goes as planned, so stay tuned!

Warrior woman, Zoe Washburne

Alright everybody, next on the individual installment is Zoe Washburne! I'm really happy with how she turned out, I was worried about her overall look but in the end she turned out great. She is the first character I used doll hair for, and it turned out looking really great. It was insane to work with, though. Every time you touched the hair it would double in size, and little pieces would fall out everywhere--it was really hard to work with.
We decided to go with her outfit for the first episode (like we did for most of the characters) and so she has her little green jacket on.
See the little lines on the jacket? Those were painted on to imitate the quilting pattern on the jacket. I think it turned out looking really well, and it saved me the trouble of actually freehand quilting that stuff on.
And of course she has her shotgun. She has two belts, the black one with the gold buckle sits straight on, high up, and her ammo belt is slung down low. She has little three sections of bullets around her lower belt, they're pretty cool actually. And then of course she has a (working!) buckle on that belt too. Her gun can go in it's little holster on her lower belt--it's a pretty big gun, though, so it does kind of drag on the ground.
Aww, aren't they cute? I like Wash's outfit, too, his shirt is so cute! More on him later, for now enjoy these pictures!

I love my captain!

Okay, so some people wanted to see more pictures of Mal, so here he is!

He's so cute! He's probably not one of the most complicated of the crew (you know, physically, not emotionally) but I like him. I like his jacket--he has a torn patch on his left arm that has been patched up from when he was shot in the first episode. You can't really see them that well, but he has two big gold clasps (just felt) on the front, too.

His belt is supposed to be uneven, but it was really hard to make it low-slung, so I'm not sure if that came off very well. His gun is pretty neat, though.
See, it's a little off-kilter. I'm pretty proud of his suspenders, too, even though they were a pain in the butt to make. And for any shippers out there-

Jayne Cobb Amigurumi

Okay, everyone wanted to see Jayne the most, so here he is! The hero of Canton in the flesh (well, yarn):

Ta da! He has his hat--of course. We already had the colors, too, because the boy wanted to knit a Jayne hat for himself. That didn't turn out to well. And yes, I crocheted the hat, but only because I cannot knit with double pointed needles to save my life. And the little poof ball on top! I like that part.

And of course, where would Jayne be without his favorite gun? Probably dead somewhere, but that's not the point. Here's Vera, made out of sculpey of course, hooked onto Jayne via a strap around his chest. His belt has little pockets on it, too. And his belt buckle is actually functional! How crazy is that?
He doesn't have much in the way of accessories, but the ones that he does have I think are really great. He even has his little wrist cuff! And grenades, of course. I was worried about how he would turn out, being kind of stubbly with really short hair (which is really hard to imitate in crochet and felt) but I think he is really great looking.

Anyway, Jayne is the first Firefly crew member we have pictures of, but there are eight more to go! Stay tuned.

Firefly!

Alright everyone, the Firefly crew is finally done! I said I would have them posted this weekend, and--okay--I lied. It's very very early Monday morning. But I wanted to show you guys so bad, I had to post them tonight!
Now you still have to tune in later, this picture doesn't show any of the accessories we made--and let me tell you, we made a lot and they are super cool. I'll show individual shots later, but I just wanted to get the whole crew out there. I hope you guys enjoy! More details will be posted later on today.

Grrr!

Grrr! I'm getting frustrated with the Firefly people. They are taking so long, and there are so many of them! And we have been getting lots of custom orders (which are really cool though, but they do take time away from Firefly) so it's been harder to squeeze in time. Oh yeah, and "Lost" was two hours last night, so that cut into time too. (How insanely crazy was that episode? I wanted to make some Lost amigurumi, but we decided it would just be a bunch of normal-looking people with dirty ripped clothes).

So anyway, I wanted to get some input from any Firefly fans out there (or anyone with an eye for clothes, at least). Which outfit would look better for River?
I think the little vest thing is interested, but then there's also this:
And I thought it would be really fun to crochet her vest. But the dress underneath might be hard to make, so now I'm not sure again. Boyfriend said no biker shorts, so any of her other outfits are kind of out.

Anyway, not much more to say right now, sorry it was such an uninformative post. Oh, what's that? You want a teaser picture for your trouble of reading through my ramblings? Okay, fine. Here.
