Broship of the Rings

Oh my gosh, these are too hilarious!  Check out the Broship of the Rings, by Noelle over at How Are You I'm Fine Thanks,

There they are, the Broship.

And this isn't part of the Broship series, but I thought it was too hilarious.
I laugh every time this scene comes on.  It's like Legolas understood what a diversion was only in the most abstract sense, and then, in that moment, it finally clicked for him.  Too funny.

Anyway, you guys really should check out How Are You I'm Fine Thanks, because it's really funny.  And there are really funny X-Men comics over there too.

Blarg!

Another great (and free!) pattern over on Ravelry. That place is amazing, I love searching through all the new patterns put up every day. Anyway, check out this latest one I found!

Recognize it? It's an elven leaf brooch! It's so pretty too that you could wear it and not look like a freak (who knew that wearing a hobbit cloak in public was a weird thing to do?) but the other nerds hiding in the crowd would totally understand what it is. Very cool.

Don't lose your head!

Check out this awesome fell beast! I don't think they get enough love in the Lord of the Rings universe. Made by the same girl who made this dragon I have already talked about. The dragons themselves were cute enough (and inspired by the Reign of Fire dragons, so they were already kind of nerdy), but now she modified her pattern to make a fell beast.

Look at his little teeth! Isn't he so adorable? I like the little spikeys on his back. And everything is poseable! There are wires running all through the neck and wings so that you can reenact your very favorite scene from Lord of the Rings. As long as it's not the part where he gets his head chopped off.

You can pick up the pattern for the original dragon over on etsy, but as of right now there is no pattern for the fell beast. And check out even more pictures over on Craftster! I think I might need one of these to guard my Lord of the Rings DVDs. Anyway, stay tuned!

Guess what today is!

That's right, it's Limerick Day! Which means you can go around reciting naughty limericks and no one can stop you. That's what it means, right? If it's not, then I'm probably fired. Anyway, I found some really funny limericks, thought I would share them here. Some of them aren't quite right (I'm really obsessive about the right number of syllables in a line, and some of these are a little off) but they're still pretty funny.

First, a Star Wars one.

The fourth Star Wars movie came first
And it led to a decades long thirst
For starships and lasers
And photons and phasers
Its influence wasn't the worst

The second one wasn't half bad
Though the freezing of Solo was sad
But the biggest plot twist
Wasn't Luke's cut-off wrist
It was Vader as Skywalker's dad

The third movie sold lots of toys
Fuzzy Ewoks the stature of boys
Luke's regretting that kiss
Now that Leia's his sis
And Han Solo is sharing her joys

And some Lord of the Rings limericks.

The Elves rescued Frodo, hooray!
But then sent him into the fray,
"Poor Middle Earth's stuffed
and we've had enough
we're all nicking off, anyway!"

When Gandalf fell down to the pit
the audience thought that was it
but he'll be all right
and come back in white
the sequel is already writ!

Yay! Feel free to leave a naughty limerick in the comments section. Stay tuned!

Denethor, please keep away.

Alright, we know that Minas Tirith has been recreated as food many times. First the gumdrop city, and then as a cake. Old news. But now the White City has been recreated with matchsticks! That's right. I don't know why this particular person chose matchsticks, but he is doing a really awesome job. It's not complete yet, as you can probably tell from the picture, and it looks like it's estimated finish date is sometime in 2010. Seeing as how it was started in 2007, this thing is a major project. I can't imagine having it in my living room for that long.
Overall shot--the top part isn't quite finished yet.

The detail on this thing is just incredible! You can check out the website for more detail shots, though there isn't much information on how it was constructed other than carefully and tediously. I wonder if he is going to buy little Lord of the Rings people to populate it with. Probably not. Anyway, stay tuned!

I doubt the reach of HIS arm!

Because he's so tiny! Get it? Alright, nevermind. Anyway, here he is, (three days later than I promised, I know! I've been so bad!) Eomer, son of Eomund, rider of Rohan!
He he! Isn't he cute? He was pretty complicated, too. His helmet, of course, is amazing, and made out of scupey. He has, like, four layers of felt on---the green part (you can only see it sticking out of the front a little bit) and then the silver scale thing over that, and then the red armor part is two layers of felt. Then, everything is painted, and he has little gauntlets and fake chain mail. Here's his helmet:

It has a little horsey on the front and everything! And of course the horse tail (or whatever it is supposed to be) coming out of the top of the helmet. Look at all of the little details and engravings! It's crazy.

And here's everything all laid out--his helmet, and sword. His sword just tucks into his belt.

Anyway, I was so excited to share him with you guys, I just couldn't wait! We will be putting some better pictures on flickr later today or tomorrow, so keep an eye out for them. Cobra Commander is next, we're planning on having him ready by this weekend.

EDIT: Updated pretty pictures!

Geeky find of the day

Okay, so I was on Etsy, looking around at some leather journals, and I thought "Wouldn't it be cool if someone made Bilbo's journal from Lord of the Rings"? Well, it turns out that no one did. But I did some searching on the internet, and check this out:
It's so pretty, right? Beautiful red leather, embossed with the star on the top and Bilbo Baggins' initials on the bottom. But wait, there's more!
There are a ton more pictures here and the pages are all beautifully written and have gorgeous pictures. The guy who made this replicated the entire Lord of the Rings story (including The Hobbit) and used a different style of handwriting for each person--Bilbo, Frodo, and then Sam. It's AMAZING, that's pretty much all I can say. He must have had a lot of patience to replicate the work like this. I can't believe how detailed it is. Unfortunately the pictures don't get much bigger than this, but I'll take what I can get.

If you like this sort of thing, the same person (I couldn't find much info about him) also made an awesome Holy Grail diary notebook with pages from the movie. Just like Bilbo's journal, it is meticulously detailed and beautifully drawn. He also has other props here if you guys want to check them out--everything from Indy's passports to Lord of the Rings maps (with invisible runes!) to Pirates of the Caribbean coins.

I promise I'm getting back to work now! We should have our latest character done by today. He's so cool! I can't wait to show him off.

Gandalf the White

Okay okay, we weren't working on the Firefly people this weekend. (Well, sort of, Vera is done now, as well as Zoe's gun and some other small accessories). But here's what we were working on instead!

It's Gandalf the White! Excuse the surprised look, I sewed his eyebrows on a little high. It's better than a little low though, otherwise he would look really angry. Anyway, we have had pieces of him done forever--the staff has been done for a couple of weeks, his clasp has been done for a month (which you can't even see because it's hidden by his beard!), and I quilted his front piece a couple of days ago. He actually came together pretty fast.

That diamond piece is quilted, and the white piece under it is painted. His cloak also has little painting designs around the edge too.
Uh oh...What's happening...
No! The two can't meet! Oh no!! Time paradox!
Aw man, the two Gandalfs broke the world. Good job guys.

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Lord of the Rings custom orders

I wanted to share with you guys the two custom orders we just finished. They are SO COOL.
It's the Witch King of Angmar! He's so evil, yet so cute at the same time. Okay, maybe more evil than cute. We didn't want to make the sword look corny and like it is on fire, so it is tinged red to make it sort of firey looking.
That's right, he has a mace too. The pictures don't really show it, but his coat is all tattered and ratty looking, and he has little spikes on the back of his arms. He is really super cool, he turned out really awesomely. We were worried about how his face armor was going to turn out, but it is so cool and so spikey. (I'm still a little excited about finishing him, so I'm not very coherent in my thoughts yet).

And our other creation:
King Aragorn! I love the tree of Gondor, so any little guy with the tree on his armor is all right in my book. I think Aragorn turned out really well though. He has a lot of painting done on his coat.

The silver stuff on his arms is supposed to be chain mail (I hope you can tell). I just crocheted it out of silver thread. I like the effect it gives, rather than just using silver yarn. He also has shoulder armor on:
Ah! He turned out super cute. The eye placement is really important when you make amigurumi dudes, and his eyes turned out really well. If you don't place them correctly, you can end up with slightly retarded looking amigurumis.

Anyway, I hope you guys like this latest batch! I'm really happy with how they turned out. I'm working on some more custom orders right now, but I also finished some more dudes to put up in the shop. I'm really excited about the new custom orders too though, I'm not sure with how they'll turn out but I am super excited to work on them.

Hope you guys enjoyed!

The Horsey King!

Alright everyone, it's time for the final installment of the Lord of the Rings amigurumi characters. At least for the moment. I present to you, Theoden, King of Rohan!
He doesn't have as many accessories as some as the other guys, but he sure is painted up! I like his little gauntlets, too. His cape is a dark green felt and then painted red on the inside, but I'm not sure if you can see that very well. Isn't his little belt buckle adorable? The boy did that, I'm not quite sure how, but it's awesome.

Here's another shot of him--you can't really tell, but under his V-neck he has another little piece of painted felt. So detailed!

Next post--Star Wars people! I promise.

Fair Shield Maiden...

Alright, as promised, shield maiden of the year, Eowyn!
Yeah I know, poor Eowyn doesn't have a really cool costume like the guys (although I guess we could have made her when she was in disguise at the battle of Pelennor Fields) but I thought this costume was the most iconic for her character. Out of all of the dudes we made, though, she does have the most costume changes, so it might be cool to make some different outfits for her...

Anyway, this dress is pretty simple. The white felt is on the bottom, with painted gold, and then her little burgundy vest over that. I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but her sleeves have little braided ties on them.

I'm not 100% happy with her hair color, but our Hobby Lobby for some reason didn't have anything that I liked better.

Star Wars news: I am working on the new Star Wars set of people, and let me tell you, I am not really feeling them. The boy made AWESOME AWESOME blasters and lightsabers, but the clothes are so plain that I'm not sure they pop in the same way. The classic Leia outfit is just a piece of white felt with a belt on it! Maybe I'm just being too critical--I'll post some pictures next week, and if anyone is out there, maybe I can get some opinions on this.

New Lord of the Rings characters

Well, my plan for this blog was to post all of the Fellowship members, along with pictures and my incredibly witty, insightful thoughts about creating them. Well, since the Fellowship has burst upon the interwebs (with more incredible success than I thought possible, like this or this or this) I thought I would post some information about some LotR characters that I didn't show everyone. You know, maybe to make this blog actually relevant?

Okay, here goes--

Faramir! Isn't he so cute? Unlike the members of the Fellowship, he doesn't have any accessories. Of course, the tree of Gondor on his outfit is so incredible, that I don't think he needs anything. He is kind of complicated, though--he has three different layers of felt (the brown, the tan, and the dark brown) and little gold rings connecting the tan colors together. And of course his cloak.

The bottommost layers of felt have some decorative "baseball" stitching on them (not sure if that's a technical term, but it's the kind of stitching they have on baseballs so it's a good bet). And of course the belt--we have TONS of leather, since the boy used to work at a furniture store and got to keep lots of their little fabric samples they threw away.

I don't have a picture of him next to his brother Boromir, but they do look like they are related! Faramir's hair is one shade lighter but still in the same color category.

Faramir was the first non-Fellowship member I made, and of course (so he wouldn't be lonely) I had to make his lady-love, Eowyn--but you have to wait till the next post to see her! Okay, you could cheat and go to my flickr page, but then you wouldn't get to see all of the neat things I have to say about her!
